Week of March 12 Updates
Posted On:
Monday, March 12, 2018

Hello again everyone!

Just 10 short days to go until Spring Break! We hope you have a great upcoming week! This is the time of year where we are really in need of the funding from our optional class fees to provide needed supplies to our teachers. If you haven’t already, please consider visiting where you can pay these fees online and support us here at HMS. Thank you so much!

We want to continue to highlight the new CCSD County-Wide Safety Tip Line. will immediately notify representatives of both the school system and the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Department and we encourage you please to please contact this address at any time with any safety concerns you may have.

Between 7:15 and 4:00pm, Monday-Friday, we also have our Internal HMS Bullying/Tip line that can be reached at 615-829-6072. This number can also be utilized at any time for any questions, concerns, related to the operation of HMS as the number goes directly to both myself and Mr. Baker.

We need to make a very important announcement regarding morning drop off procedures at HMS. At the request of the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Department, we will be closing the back entrance to HMS in the mornings beginning after Spring Break and directing all drop off traffic to the front of the building. We will be discussing this procedural change in more detail in the coming weeks, but I did need to go ahead and make everyone aware that this change will be occurring soon.

Our Big Positive Behavior Event will be taking place next Friday the 23rd from 1:15-2:45 at HMS. We will have DJ Johnny with us once again, as well as multiple food trucks, and several other fun activities going occurring across the building. Students that have demonstrated consistent positive behavior according to the standards set forth by each grade level and that have avoided office referrals between February 19th and March 23rd will be eligible to attend this event.

Many students and parents have been asking about the new Xbox Mobile Labs that have been seen around the building the last week or so. Mr. Baker was able to secure a grant earlier in the year that provided us with the funds to put together 4 of these mobile labs. Teachers and staff will be able to soon check-out these labs to utilize their Xbox Kinect Features, as we have also purchased many of the great fitness and health games that utilize the Kinect Technology. These labs will be meant to support and supplement health-related activities and lessons occurring all across our building

Parents: Please set aside the date of Friday May 18th for our Awards Ceremony here at HMS. Grade levels will send out announcements in the weeks leading up to these events. We will be working to set the specific grade level award times very soon, but all 5th-8th grades will all be occurring on this day.

8th Grade Parents: Please note that the Awards Day on the 18th and the Graduation Ceremony on the 23rd are two different events.

We really really love to have parent volunteers anytime you see an event going on at HMS. I want to thank all of our parents that reach out to me to assist with various events and other happenings within our building and I encourage anyone that would ever be interested in volunteering during the school day at HMS, or at any of our various events or activities within the building, to please respond to this email and let me know at any time!

8th Grade Parents: Please don’t forget about the Washington DC Parent Meeting this Wednesday Night at 6:00pm in the HMS Cafeteria.

News From Around HMS

From Ms. Bobo and Ms. West: After months of preparation, Mrs. Bobo’s and Ms. West’s 7th grade RTI group took a field trip to the Davidson County Courthouse to perform a mock trial! Students read the book “Touching Spirit Bear” at the beginning of the school year then began studying legal terms, court rules, and positions within the court room. Each student was given a role and helped prepare for the trial. The final decision from the jury was that the defendant(a character in the book) was guilty and would serve 3 months in juvenile detention. Metro legal attorneys gave feedback to the students after the trial and they got to meet the director of law while touring the court house. It was a such a great experience for the students!

From Ms. Greece: The spring chorus will be Monday, April 23rd at 6:30 pm in the HMS gym. Students are asked to wear a plain white tee shirt, plaid or flannel button up shirt (to be tied around the waist), jeans, and if possible combat boots, converse or vans type sneakers. Basically, we are trying to pull off a 90s grunge look. Please don’t feel obligated to go out and purchase clothing items, but just what is in their closet that goes with this look as closely as possible. The white tee shirt will be most important to keep some uniformity. Thank you!

From Mr. Cooper: Mr. Cooper’s RTI has begun two major media projects for HMS and Cheatham County Schools. The first project is a regular Podcast “Celebrate Cheatham” which will focus on celebrating and highlighting Cheatham County Schools more in depth beyond Social Media. The first recording of Celebrate Cheatham will occur Monday, March 12th and will Feature Dr. Cathy Beck: Director of Schools, Shelley Duke: Coordinated School Health Supervisor, and Sgt. Chris Gilmore: Supervisor, Cheatham County Schools Resource Officers. The episode will focus on school safety and will include pertinent discussion for all Cheatham County Schools and Students.

Celebrate Cheatham is Hosted by Mr. Cooper and 8th Grader, Austin Thompson and edited and produced by a morning RTI team with Mr. Cooper. New Episodes will be available on Thursdays through Stitcher and Soundcloud platforms.
