Hello again everyone:


Wow, we certainly had quite the week here at HMS (and across the entire county) as we ventured into state testing through the online platform. Obviously the struggles and technical issues have been well-cemented across multiple platforms, but we truly were able to come together as a district by the end of the week and end our first week on a very smooth and nearly problem-free note. We are confident that the issues with TN Ready Testing have been addressed and that we will hopefully be able to finish up this testing window in as smooth a manner as possible. This is still a very important test for us (even as details are being worked out on scoring with the legislature and State DOE) and we continue to ask that you please be sure your students make it to school on time on testing days and that they come in ready to go for each test with a positive attitude. Below is our updated testing schedule that we anticipate being able to follow up until the end of the testing window.

**A reminder to all 7th and 8th grade students to please be sure you have your laptops with you every day we have testing and that they come to school fully charged!


We hope to see you all for our Chorus Concert tomorrow evening at HMS starting at 6:30pm. This incredible concert will feature performances from the HMS Daycare, HMS Faculty and Staff, Dr. Cathy Beck, and of course the 60+ incredible student members of the Chorus!! This will be a celebration of music from the 1980’s and 1990’s and will feature everything from Journey, to the Foo Fighters, to REM, to Weezer and will be an amazing trip down memory lane for the members of the audience. There will also be a shortened “Encore Performance” in school on the 24th at 1:40pm that will include a selection of the songs form the 23rd concert, in addition to a performance from the HMS Band!


This past Thursday we hosted a very special ceremony in the HMS Library that was attended by myself and Mr. Baker, our school counselors, and approx. 20 other members of the HMS Staff. We came together to honor, and share stories about, 8 very special individuals that were recently voted on by staff members as the recipients of the “Student of the Year Award” for their respective grade levels. Based on academics, leadership, and overall character and integrity, these 8 individuals were chosen to represent their grade levels and we want to publicly thank them for being an incredible part of the HMS Family every single day! These students will be further honored at the Grade Level Awards Ceremonies on May 18th at HMS. Congrats again to the HMS Students of the Year!!

Also on Thursday evening, I was honored to be able to help recognize our 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year at HMS, Ms. Brittney Burgess, at the annual Teacher of the Year Dinner in Ashland City. In addition to being one of the finest math teachers in the entire CCSD, Brittney represents one of the essential leaders in our building at HMS that helps to drive so many of the wonderful things that go on in our school community. As a representative for our Leadership Team, a driving force behind our work with data and professional learning communities, and one of the models for new technologies and innovative teaching practices at HMS, Brittney represents the best of what we do at Harpeth Middle and it was an honor to be able to speak on her behalf to my fellow administrators, leaders, and other TOTY winners across the county. Thank you so much Ms. Burgess for truly representing the best of what it means to be an educational professional!

Please don’t forget to continue supporting the HMS Spring Fundraiser! A reminder that Kingston Springs/Bellevue Discount Cards are being sold for 20 dollars each and the Nashville-wide cards for 25. Students that sell 5 of either card (or combination of the two) will be invited to attend the all-day Fundraiser Celebration Event on May 15th!

8th Grade Parents: We are accepting slideshow pictures up until May 15th and they may be emailed to hmsgraduation2018@gmail. Please be sure you also include the attached documentation sheet. Don’t forget that graduation will take place on May 23rd at 8:30am at HMS and dress for the event will be Black/White Semi Formal with khakis being ok as well.

From Nurse Casey Ealy: Any 6th grade students who wish to go ahead and get their 7th grade immunizations (Tdap booster and must have 2nd dose of Varicella) can have their doctor fax their new shot record, which has to be on the Tennessee Department of Health form to HMS at 615-952-4527. 7th Grade Parents,

Spots are filling up quickly for next year’s 8th grade trip to DC/NY. This is an amazing opportunity and we want to take as many students as possible. The early start helps to allow a lower monthly payment, making the opportunity open to as many as possible.

From Ms. Edwards: Special Olympics is scheduled here at Harpeth Middle School on May 4th with Opening Ceremonies beginning at 9:30.


There will be a KODA Club Field Day this Friday, April 27th on the football field - 1:00 until end of day. This event will be for KODA members and life skills students with various active games and also training for the Special Olympics.


For those KODA members and others helping out with the Special Olympics: Sponsor Forms are due this Friday, April 27th.


Slushies will be on sale in the Commons Area during Recharge Time (1:40) both Tuesday and Thursday this week.


Please support the Special Olympics by contributing spare change to Sponsor Jars in the hallway outside the Life Skills room.


From Ms. Greece: It’s finally time for the concert, and we are so excited to perform for you. Here a just a few reminders...


The chorus concert is tomorrow, Monday April 23rd at 6:30 in the HMS gym. Chorus members are to wear a solid white tee shirt, jeans (preferably holes in the knees), a flannel or plaid shirt to be tied around the waist, and sneakers or combat boots. Students are to look like 90’s grunge to the best of their ability. Students should report at 6:00 to my room.


I’ll be accepting animal shelter items that night in lieu of admission to the concert. They need paper towels, blankets/towels/bedding, large leashes (not retractable), large collars/harnesses, high efficiency laundry detergent, food, treats, toys, cat litter, and anything else that seems appropriate.


We will continue our popcorn sale this week. I need 4 more students/parents to commit. The tote has 30 bags of popcorn. They are 2$ per bag. Students must sale the entire tote. The bill is due May 3rd, but I’m going to see if that can be extended. The tote is theirs to keep! This will help pay for awards hopefully this and next year. Please consider helping. I’m aware there are other fundraisers occurring and apologize that this had to occur simultaneously. If you are wanting to pre-pay and not worry about keeping up with the money, please, make the check out to Harpeth Middle School. I am not allowed to have it made out directly to me. I am so sorry for those of you who I have had to return your check because of that. I forgot to clarify that in the permission slip. I will have the leftover totes at the concert with extra permission slips if you'd like to grab it that night as well. Thank you to the 11 who have committed so far. You Rock! I will also have individual bags for sale at the concert for those who can’t sale but want to help in a small way. :)
